About me
Norman L. Eisen is the co-founder and executive chair of Democracy Defenders Fund and one of the nation's leading experts on government ethics, the rule of law, and democratic institutions. An attorney and diplomat, he served as Special Counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee during the first impeachment of President Donald Trump and previously served as White House Special Counsel for Ethics and Government Reform under President Barack Obama, where he helped strengthen ethics and transparency standards across the executive branch.
President Obama later appointed Eisen as United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic, where he worked to strengthen democratic institutions and transatlantic partnerships. Throughout his career, he has focused on government accountability, anti-corruption efforts, and protecting democratic norms, becoming a leading voice on constitutional law and public integrity.
Eisen is the author and editor of several influential books on democracy, ethics, and American government, including A Case for the American People, The Last Palace, Overcoming Trumpery, Democracy's Defenders, and States United. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other major publications, and he is a frequent legal analyst on national television and radio.
Whether leading Democracy Defenders Fund, serving in government, or writing about the Constitution and the rule of law, Eisen has remained committed to the principle that democracy depends on accountability, strong institutions, and public trust. His work continues to shape national conversations about ethics, constitutional governance, and the future of American democracy.
