About me
Lourdes Galvan is a longtime public servant, community advocate, and civil rights leader who has spent more than 50 years working to improve the lives of families in San Antonio and across Texas. A former San Antonio City Councilwoman and Past LULAC National Vice President for Women, she has dedicated her career to advancing education, affordable housing, economic opportunity, health care, senior services, and civic engagement.
Born and raised on San Antonio's West Side, Galvan balanced raising four children, working as a civil servant, attending night school, and serving her community at every level of government. Her leadership has produced a number of groundbreaking achievements, including co-founding the first Athletic Booster Club at Sidney Lanier High School, helping negotiate affordable housing development in the Vista Verde community, directing one of the nation's first Women's Employment and Education programs, and becoming the first Hispanic woman elected to represent District 5 on the San Antonio City Council.
Galvan also broke barriers as the first woman elected president of the American Federation of Government Employees at Kirtland Air Force Base, representing more than 13,000 civil service employees, and co-founded the first internet café on San Antonio's West Side to provide free internet access for students and families. Her career has been defined by a willingness to tackle practical problems and create opportunities where none existed before.
Whether serving on the San Antonio City Council, leading LULAC's national women's initiatives, or continuing her public service on regional boards and commissions, Galvan has remained guided by a simple belief: strong communities are built by people willing to step forward, solve problems, and leave the next generation with greater opportunities than they had themselves.
